STEM Updates - October 2017
STEM Bake Off
Last week six children went to City College to take part in a ‘Bake Off’. They learnt about the science behind
baking and were able to decorate their own cakes!
Half Term STEM activities
During half term Apple, based in Drake Circus, have a variety of workshops that children can participate in. You can sign up using the web address on the newsletter sent out from school.
Grand Design Update
Thank you to everyone that entered the Grand Designs STEM competition. All of the entries we received are fantastic and we will be short listing over the next few weeks. Whilst we are doing this, we will be hunting for a shell to form the base of our design project such as a caravan, bus, aeroplane, van or something similar! If this is something you could help the school to find, please see Miss Byrom. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
BULWARK VISIT – October 2017
On Wednesday 27th September, ten STEM Club children visited HMS Bulwark for a range of activities organised by Babcock. They were amazed by how big the ship was and coped well with the ladders they had to climb up and down! Lunch was provided in the ship’s mess which was delicious. Freya in Chestnut Class excelled during the activities which included Lego building, tower building and snorkelling! Freya was awarded a special trophy from Babcock. The children had a great day aboard this ship, Aye Aye shipmates!
STEMFEST - September 2017
10 children visited the aquarium for STEMfest 2017. We were joined by other schools and professionals from all over the South West including, engineers and architects. The children have been set a challenge to design a new tank to house a giant squid, which can be 13 metres long! The children worked brilliantly with architects to design the build, engineers to measure the new area and scientists to dissect a squid and learn a bit more about it.
