Phonics

Phonics is taught through the Read, Write, Inc model which is a rigorous approach to the teaching of reading and comprehension in line with the National Curriculum.

Mrs Field is our Read, Write, Inc manager at Oakwood. She attends training and co-ordinates the implementation, monitoring and assessment of the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme in school. There are many helpful resources and information for parents regarding RWI on the Ruth Miskin website, please click on the link below to find out more.

How Read Write Inc is taught

Read Write Inc. Phonics is a complete literacy programme, for 3 to 7 year old children learning to read and write. Read Write Inc is a synthetic phonics programme. There are 44 sounds in the English language. Each word is made up of pure sounds. At Oakwood Primary Academy we begin teaching the initial sounds at the  start of the Foundation Stage and then teach Read Write Inc. in hourly sessions 4 days a week until they are secure in their reading.

Click on the links below to support your child with reading at home. The videos include a sound pronunciation guide and how to model reading at home.
As you are aware, e-safety is embedded in our curriculum to ensure all children are able to make the right choices to stay safe online and know who to ask if they have any concerns. In this digital age, some of you might have concerns or questions about the use of social media by your child. The poster in the link above may be useful to give you some ideas for having that ongoing conversation with your child about staying safe on social media. It is from the popular blog ‘The Ultimate Parent Guide for Protecting Your Child on the Internet’ (if you type it into google it will come up), which is extremely informative and well worth a read. Other useful websites include www.saferinternet.org.uk and www.nspcc.org.uk. Please do not hesitate to also speak to your child’s class teacher if you have any concerns or would like more information.
