Year 2 Holmes and Everson Classes

Welcome to Year 2: Holmes and Everson

In Year 2, we believe in the importance of encouraging children to become independent learners who are confident to give new challenges a go.  We celebrate individual achievements and encourage children to collaborate within a team sharing their creativity and contribution skills.

We will use this class page to communicate information to you over the course of this academic year. It will be updated with curriculum and key information as well as photographs of the children in action. We look forward to a happy and productive relationship with you across the year. If you would like to contact a member of the team please do so via the school office (oakwood.office@discoverymat.co.uk).

Phonics

Phonics is taught through the Read, Write, Inc model which is a rigorous approach to the teaching of reading and comprehension in line with the National Curriculum.

Mrs Wye is our Read, Write, Inc manager at Oakwood. She attends training and co-ordinates the implementation, monitoring and assessment of the Read Write Inc (RWI) programme in school. There are many helpful resources and information for parents regarding RWI on the Ruth Miskin website, please click on the link below to find out more.

How Read Write Inc is taught

Read Write Inc. Phonics is a complete literacy programme, for 3 to 7 year old children learning to read and write. Read Write Inc is a synthetic phonics programme. There are 44 sounds in the English language. Each word is made up of pure sounds. At Oakwood Primary Academy we begin teaching the initial sounds at the start of the Foundation Stage and then teach Read Write Inc. in hourly sessions 4 days a week until they are secure in their reading.
